The introduction of vitamin A into the formulation of skin care products heralded a new era in the treatment of sun-damaged skin. Although some cosmetic houses were using very low doses of vitamin A in their skin care products in the 1980s, Dr Des Fernandes, a prominent Cape Town plastic surgeon, was the first person in the world to introduce vitamin A in high effective doses. This range established Environ® as a leader in skin care.

The Environ® skin care range was first formulated as a result of Dr Fernandes’misfortune when he attempted to treat the melanoma of two young, charismatic patients, who both died before they were twenty-three years old. Such a horrifying experience leaves an indelible scar on one’s life as a doctor. For this reason, he started to study the mechanism of skin cancer and the skin - and thus Environ®was born.

The cosmetic manufacturing company,Environ Skin Care cc, was founded by Dr Fernandes in1990 and he soon expanded its number of products into a full skin care range. Environ® skin care products are manufactured under strictly controlled laboratory conditions at the Environ® factory in Cape Town,South Africa.

The company is owned by Dr Des Fernandes and his sister,Mrs Val Metcalfe. It now has an extensive distribution network throughout South Africa and exports to more than thirty countries worldwide.

Dr Fernandes has specialized in the field of plastic surgery in which he has gained the respect of his international peers. After a long career in the commercial world, Val Metcalfe joined her brother at Environ Skin Care cc as its CEO, bringing with her a wealth of business experience that she has used to engineer and build Environ® into the company it is today.

What does the Environ® skin care line consist of?

RAD SPF16 (Antioxidant Sunscreen) is suitable for all ages. Contains sun reflectants (titanium dioxide) as well as absorbent sun filters to provide protection from both UV-A and UV-B rays. Includes the major antioxidant brigade found in the skin: vitamins C and E as well as beta-carotene.

The Day/Night Creams have particular advantages for people in their late teens onwards, showing early signs of sun damage. One must first acclimatize the skin to the lower levels of vitamin A before moving on to the higher dose products.

The Alpha Hydroxy Range is used when sun damage has occurred and the skin is rough and dry.The Alpha range must always be used in conjunction with the Day/Night range or Ionzyme series and should be used intermittently. Always use a sunscreen like RAD or Alpha Day Lotion SPF 15 when using the Alpha range.

The Ionzyme Series concentrates on maximal skin penetration of the essential vitamins A, C, and E. The products are suitable for all skin types,except problematic skin types. The Ionzyme range is made specifically for the client so that it is delivered as fresh as possible to the user, ensuring that the most significant vitamins are still most active.

The ß-Active Range is specifically designed for people with problem skins, including those who have breakouts (acne). All products contain Australian tea tree oil.

The Interactive Range is suitable for people of all ages and includes a variety of products that can be used in conjunction with one's regular skin care regime. These include cleansers, masques, make-up removers, hand& nail cream, etc.

The Intensive Range is designed for those people who require more intensive treatments than usual to achieve the required results. These are specialized products incorporating high doses of vitamin A, vitamin C and growth factors to be used for individual skin problems.
